Physics students from the University of Amsterdam win the Rabobank/ACE Entrepreneurship Summer School 2016

Wesley Poland and Joran Angevaare, students at the University of Amsterdam, are the winners of the 11th edition of the Rabobank/ACE Entrepreneurship Summer School, with their entry “’XR4Y ” (X-Ray for You). XR4Y is a mobile x-ray device, for on-site diagnosis of potential injury, after an accident. Wesley Poland and Joran Angevaare received the first price, 20 hours of coaching. The jury was unable to reach consensus on the second and third place. The jury decided to award both Bogos Basak, for “Coupontrade”, an online platform for unused coupons, and e-tickets and Bram Orsel en Tony Nader, for “Fanfrica”, a device to minimize the negative effects of indoor air pollution in developing countries with the second price, 10 hours of coaching both.

In the week of 4 July, 27 participants attended the 11th edition of the annual Entrepreneurship Summer School, organized by Rabobank Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE). The 27 (future) student-entrepreneurs developed their business ideas into solid business plans with the help of experts from Rabobank Amsterdam, EY and ACE, workshops on networking (Charles Ruffalo), branding (Sarah de Lange), sales (Tom Oor) and accounting (EY) and inspirational lectures from successful entrepreneurs Philip Hillege, Hans Drenth, Maaike de Reuver, Jordi Erken and Edwin Duijst.

The participants are students from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK). A number of wildcards were given to students from the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and the SAE Institute Amsterdam.

The final day of the Entrepreneurship Summer School, started by sounding the gong.  Prof. Enno Masurel, Scientific Director at ACE, opened trading together with the (future) student-entrepreneurs and representatives of Rabobank Amsterdam and ACE. In the afternoon, five finalists pitched their business plans in front of a professional jury at the Royal Industrieele Groote Club Amsterdam. The jury consisted of Barbara Visser (Dutch Parliament for VVD), Eric Traa (Rabobank Amsterdam), Jaleesa van Beek (NEO NAIL TECH), Eveline Stam (VU) and Enno Masurel (VU).

The Rabobank/ACE Entrepreneurship Summer School is an annual weeklong event taking place in July, for student entrepreneurs interested in developing their idea into a complete business-plan. This year was the 11th edition of the Summer School, organized by ACE and partner Rabobank.

ACE encourages entrepreneurship by providing a broad education and research program and contributes to the development of entrepreneurship skills and knowledge. ACE is a partnership of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK).
